The biggest mistake in case buying is choosing on appearance and then discovering a clearance problem during assembly, at which point returning the case means unbuilding the machine. Work through five questions first, in this order, and the shortlist writes itself.

What the ATX label guarantees, and what it does not
ATX is a motherboard specification, not a case specification. It fixes the board outline at 305 x 244mm, the mounting hole pattern, the rear I/O window at 158.75 x 44.45mm and the expansion slot spacing at 20.32mm. Any case advertised as ATX will hold any ATX board, and that part is genuinely reliable.
What the label says nothing about is everything that actually determines whether your build works. It does not specify cooler height, graphics card length, radiator support, power supply length, drive cage position, cable routing depth, front panel connectors or fan count. Two cases can both be honestly labelled ATX mid-tower and differ by 40mm of cooler clearance and 90mm of card clearance. That is why the specification table on the manufacturer’s own page is the document that matters, and why I list measured figures below rather than repeating marketing copy.
One more distinction worth fixing in your head: Micro-ATX is a smaller board standard at 244 x 244mm, and a Micro-ATX case will not take a full ATX board. The reverse is fine, since every ATX case accepts a Micro-ATX board on the same standoffs. The four clearances that decide whether your parts fit
CPU cooler height is measured from the motherboard surface to the inside of the side panel. Large air coolers land between 158 and 168mm. Graphics card length is measured from the rear bracket to the far end of the shroud, and cases quote it with the front fans installed or removed, often without saying which. Where a case gives one number, assume it is the optimistic one and subtract 20mm if you intend to install a front radiator. Card thickness matters separately: a 70mm three-slot card sits close enough to a front-mounted 360mm radiator that the fan hub can touch the card’s backplate in slim chassis.
Radiator support is the clearance most often overstated. A case can accept a 360mm radiator in the front and still not accept a 360mm radiator plus fans plus a memory kit with tall heat spreaders if the radiator is top mounted. The figure to look for is the distance from the top of the case to the top of the motherboard, and 55mm is the point where a 27mm radiator with 25mm fans stops fighting the VRM heatsink. Power supply length and cable depth come as a pair. Most mid-towers accept a 160mm unit, but a 180mm power supply with a 40mm bundle of cables emerging from the end needs 220mm of chamber length. Behind the tray, 20mm is tight, 25mm is comfortable and 30mm is generous.
Socket compatibility and the backplate cutout problem
Cases do not have sockets, so there is no compatibility list to consult, and that absence lulls people into skipping the check entirely. The real issue is the cutout in the motherboard tray behind the CPU socket. AM5 boards place the socket slightly lower and further right than LGA1851 boards, and budget cases often stamp a cutout sized for one platform and centred badly for the other.
The consequence is not a build failure, it is a maintenance failure. If the cutout does not fully expose the cooler backplate, replacing or reseating a cooler means removing the graphics card, disconnecting everything and pulling the entire motherboard out of the case. I have done that on a Friday evening and I do not recommend it. Look for a cutout of at least 180 x 130mm, positioned high enough that its top edge sits above the socket centre line.
Rear-connector motherboards are the second half of this problem and a much harder failure. ASUS BTF, MSI Project Zero and Gigabyte Project Stealth boards move the 24-pin, EPS, fan and front-panel headers to the reverse side of the board. They require a case with large matching openings in exactly the right places, and manufacturers list this explicitly. Only one case in this group supports them. How I tested these eight cases
Every case was built with the same components: an eight-core processor set to a fixed 142W package power, a 320mm triple-fan graphics card drawing 285W, two M.2 drives, a 32GB memory kit with 44mm heat spreaders and a 750W modular power supply. The room ambient was held at 22C in the chamber, verified with two probes at intake height. The load was 30 minutes of combined processor and graphics stress, and I recorded the delta over ambient rather than absolute temperatures so ambient drift does not distort comparisons.
Noise was measured at 0.5m from the front left corner with a decibel meter, floor level at 28.4 dBA, with all fans at the speed the case ships with by default and again with every fan pinned to 1,000rpm so the chassis is compared rather than its bundled fans. Within its own class it is honest hardware. The magnetic dust filter panels can be rearranged, the front and top are ventilated, and 360mm of card clearance is unusual for the size. It ran the warmest here at a 57.9C delta, but it ships with a single fan, and adding two 120mm intakes for $18 brought that to 51.6C, which is a genuinely good result for the total outlay. Noise at 37.4 dBA reflects that stock fan working alone.

Two of those fans are non-LED and three-pin, so you cannot control them from a standard PWM header. Swapping all four for PWM fans costs about $30 and brings the case to 33.4 dBA with a 52.1C delta, at which point the total is $89 and other options make more sense. Cooler clearance is 160mm and card clearance is 330mm, both at the tighter end. Build time was 71 minutes, the longest here, mostly because the glass panels have to come off in a specific order and the cable depth is 18mm.

Fan planning: where air should enter and leave
Three intakes at the front or bottom and one exhaust at the rear is the configuration that produced the best results across seven of these eight chassis. Adding a top exhaust helped by 0.4 to 1.1C. Adding a fifth and sixth fan produced under 1C in every case and raised noise by 3 to 4 dBA, which is a bad trade.
Slight positive pressure, meaning intake fans moving marginally more air than exhaust fans, kept dust accumulation visibly lower over the four weeks I ran these systems. Noise: what the decibel meter shows and what your ears do
The spread here was 31.9 to 38.9 dBA, and 7 dBA is roughly a doubling of perceived loudness. That gap is almost entirely bundled fans and panel design, not chassis size. A dense mesh front with fine perforation is quieter than an open grille at the same airflow because it breaks up the turbulence that produces the whooshing character people find irritating.

Build quality signals worth checking on any case
Steel gauge is the honest indicator and almost nobody publishes it, so use weight as a proxy. A mid-tower under 6kg empty is thin. The Fractal North is 9.7kg, the Q300L is 4.7kg, and you can feel that difference in every panel.
Look for thumbscrews that are captive rather than loose, since loose ones end up in the carpet. Check whether the glass panel mounts on a hinge or a ball-and-socket bracket rather than four corner screws through the glass, because corner-screw glass is how panels crack. Check that the front panel cable bundle is one combined connector or at least clearly labelled, and check whether the filter under the power supply pulls out from the front or the back. Rear-pull filters mean moving the whole machine to clean them, which means you will not clean them.

Five mistakes that cause most case returns
Buying a Micro-ATX case for an ATX board. Product names are not always explicit about it and the photographs look identical. Read the board support line before anything else.
Trusting the card clearance figure without checking whether it assumes front fans are removed. Subtract 25 to 30mm from any single quoted figure if you plan a front radiator.
Assuming a glass front means bad temperatures, or that mesh means good ones. The MONTECH’s glass wraparound beat the DARKROCK’s slotted plastic front by 5.5C. Intake area and its position decide this, not the material of the panel you see.
Ignoring cable depth. An 18mm channel with a non-modular power supply will add half an hour and leave the side panel bulging. 23mm and up is the threshold where routing stops being a fight.
Buying more case than the components need. A large chassis with three fans often runs warmer than a compact one with three fans, because the same air has more volume to move. Size the case to the cooler and the card, add 20mm of margin, and stop.
